Energy Drinks and Teens: Not a Good Mix!

Teens craving that jolt of energy existing in energy drinks can harm their hearts and can lead to their death.

A 16-ounce can of Monster’s most popular energy drink contains 140 to 160 milligrams of caffeine, compared to the rising 330 milligrams in a 16-ounce cup of Starbucks coffee.

Recently, a group of expert doctors and researchers sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advising that an action plan be introduced to safeguard adolescents and children from the possible risks of high caffeine consumption.

“There is evidence in the published scientific literature that the caffeine levels in energy drinks pose serious potential health risks,” researchers stated.

With children and adolescents, meticulous attention should be applied when selecting a beverage to prevent excessive sugar and caloric intake that may encourage dental erosion and obesity.
