7-Year-Old Girl Gets Gift of Liposuction for the Holidays

Poppy Burge, with her mother, Sarah Burge (aka "The Human Barbie")
While most kids spent the holidays unwrapping toys and games, Poppy Burge received quite the grown-up gift from her mother: plastic surgery.

In her stocking, Poppy found a voucher for liposuction, something her mother saw as an "investment for the future".

Ms. Burge told the Daily Mail, “I put the voucher in her stocking – there’s nothing wrong with that. She asks for surgery all the time. She wants to look good and lipo is one of those procedures that will always come in handy. I see these vouchers as investing in her future – like saving money for her education.”

Except, giving a 7-year-old girl plastic surgery for Christmas is NOTHING like saving up for her college education. Actually, it's more like the exact opposite.

This shocking story has sparked debate among pediatricians and psychologists about how young girls and boys today are growing up way too fast.

But who is the blame for this monster that's been created? Is it the media? The fashion industry? Or parents, like Ms. Burge, who truly believes she's doing a service to her young, impressionable daughter.

She told the Daily Mail, “Some people think it's controversial and I get angry when strangers say I'm a bad mother because I don't think there's any harm in giving her this gift. Poppy is a normal kid who is good at sports and loves playing outside. Girls don’t want Snow White and Cinderella anymore. They want to be WAGs [ a term for wives and girlfriends of famous footballers] and famous like Cheryl Cole and Lady Gaga. I’m just supporting her and making her dreams come true. Looks are a big part of how our futures pan out – there shouldn’t be a stigma around wanting to look good.”

Liposuction is Better Than Ever Thanks to Two New Tools

Plastic surgery has certainly come a long way in recent years.

Innovative procedures and techniques have allowed plastic surgeons to create beautiful results with less recovery time and pain for the patient.

Two new liposuction techniques are promising to do just this and more, and are sure to become a favorite among patients and plastic surgeons in no time.

They are called Tickle Lipo and PowerX, and both come with many benefits, including very little recovery period, and the option for oral anesthesia instead of IV sedation.

Dr. Jeffery Hall, a board certified plastic surgeon in Austin, Texas told American Health and Beauty, “You don’t have to have the patient completely asleep, and the recovery is so much better for the patient. They have less bruising and less swelling for instance we did a patient on Tuesday and again we were only doing a small area like the ab and they were back to work on Friday. With the standard lipo, that is not the case – maybe 2 weeks. That's a win-win compared to the other technologies."

Cosmetic Surgery Prices May Rise in UK

The UK government has announced guidelines for a 20% VAT tax on 'elective' cosmetic surgery.

There is already VAT in place for skin care cosmetic procedures like Botox, dermal fillers, and chemical peels, but now this could extend into surgical procedures like breast implants, tummy tucks and liposuction.

The government argues, “The mere fact that a cosmetic treatment may make a patient feel more confident about their appearance is not in itself sufficient to make the treatment exempt.”

However, members of the British Association for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery disagree. They called these guidelines an "ethical minefield" and suggested more debate with professionals before going ahead with any sort of implementation.

Former BAAPS president and consultant plastic surgeon Dr. Douglas McGeorge addressed the ethical issues of this tax saying, “Should prominent ear correction be taxed; an operation performed on young children to prevent them from being bullied and developing psychological problems? What level of asymmetry or abnormality is required to justify breast surgery? When do large breasts create enough of a physical problem to allow treatment?”

He added, “Large noses will kill no one on their own, but can create major problems in life that prevents individuals contributing to society and, indeed, have been known to result in self harming.”

Liposuction May Benefit Heart Health

A recent study reported at the American Society for Plastic Surgeons annual meeting revealed an interesting benefit from a popular  plastic surgery procedure.

Not only does  liposuction smooth out curves and cinch in the waistline, it might also decrease your risk for heart disease, by lowering triglyceride levels significantly.

The study examined 322 liposuction patients, and 3 months following the procedure, found their triglycerides lowered by an average of 43 percent.

Dr. Eric Swanson, a plastic surgeon in Kansas, told MSNBC, “It made sense that if you reduced fat mass that might reduce circulating triglycerides, but I didn’t think the effect on the body’s fat scores would be enough to make a significant difference in triglycerides. A 43 percent drop in triglycerides was dramatic and surprising.”
