Does Age Really Affect Sperm Quality?
A new discovery found that conception may be contingent more so on women's fertility
and less on the age of a man's sperm. In fact, recent research has led
to the belief that age is not typically a determinant factor for sperm
quality or count.
"It is sperm quality rather than
male age that matters," stated Meenakshi Choudhary, Britain's Newcastle
Fertility Centre at Life. "Our results suggest that, up to the age of
45, there is little effect of male age on the treatment's outcome."

Face Facts about Male Infertility
Infertility is a
hurdling bump in every intended parent's path to build a family. Many
couples afflicted by infertility are surprised to learn that the
problem lies in the man. In 30 percent of infertility cases, a male
factor is solely responsible for not conceiving.
Don’t delay
seeking an infertility specialist if you and your partner are unable
to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sex.
If your wife is over
35, consult a doctor after 6 months without success.
Take the first
step and get a physical exam and sperm analysis.
Ask questions. It's
significant that you and your partner understand the results and what
is causing your infertility. Sometimes, a diagnosis might involve a
simple lifestyle change — like improving diet and cutting out
smoking and heavy drinking.

DIY Sperm Donor: Too Generous for the FDA?
Any sort of organ or tissue donation is seen as a selfless, generous act with the aim to help others.
Sperm and egg donation, however, come with controversy, and the latest one involves a California man giving his sperm away for free.
The media has dubbed 36-year-old Trend Arsenault as "the DIY sperm donor", and for the past five years, he's helped infertile couples have babies...14 to be exact, and there's 4 more currently on the way.
While this may seem like a wonderful, compassionate thing for a person to do for other families, the FDA isn't happy at all. This is because Arsenault is operating this free service out of his home, and doesn't undergo recommended sperm and blood testing before each donation.
Experts believe that by choosing a private donor, you could be putting yourself and your potential child at risk. Important health and safety regulations that most sperm banks apply simply aren't present in a private, individual setting, which has caused a lot of worry within the infertility community.
Dr. Lynn Westphal, a reproductive endocrinologist at Stanford told the SF Gate, “I know people will get their friends and just use the turkey baster or whatever. Clearly that happens, but there are reasons for these FDA regulations. It’s safer to have the sperm tested.”
Arsenault is waiting to see if the FDA is going to schedule a hearing regarding his $100,000 fine or 1 year federal prison sentence for his "unauthorized" sperm donation, and he and his law team are not going down without a fight.
He told the San Francisco Gate, “What the FDA is doing infringes on reproductive rights. The government is reaching into the bedroom. There’s no precedence for my case. Whatever happens to me kind of sets the future up for all the other people in these situations – the couples plus the donors.”
Who's right? Arsenault or the FDA?

Environmental Toxins to Blame for Male Infertility
A recent study performed by Instituto Marques in Barcelona, Spain clearly pointed out a connection between environmental pollution and male infertility problems.
The infertility specialists involved in the research discovered that people who lived in more industrialized areas had more incidence of male infertility problems like poor sperm quality.
After measuring toxins present in the breast milk of these women, those who lived in industrialized areas had absorbed much higher levels of pollution, which is where the connection was made.
Mothers absorb the environmental toxins, and they get passed on to baby during pregnancy and through breast feeding. Unfortunately for boys, these might cause damage to the testicles, and in turn, cause infertility problems in the future.

Dads are Less Likely to Die From Heart Disease
Fatherhood comes with many benefits. It's an enriching experience full of rewards, love and happiness.
A new study shows that fathers might also have a lower chance of dying from heart disease, cancer or stroke later in life, when compared to men who've never had children.
The study, lead by Dr. Michael Eisenberg, a male infertility expert at Stanford University, is the largest in history to look at the connection between infertility and mortality.
The results report stated that men without children were 17% more likely to die from heart disease, and this may be connected to some sort of male infertility factor.

Red Headed Sperm Donors Rejected!
Cryos International isn't accepting sperm donors with red hair at this time.
While this story has created quite the media buzz, Cryos is located in Denmark, where blonde and red hair, with green and blue eyes is the norm.
The agency director Ole Schou explained that they have all the redheaded sperm donors they can handle, and instead are looking for more "diverse" men to donate sperm.
He told MSNBC, "“What we need is brown-eyed Scandinavians/Caucasians and Mediterranean donors and other ethnicities and races. The problem is that we are located in Scandinavia and ‘harvest’ donors here, but we supply to more than 65 countries all over the world. They don’t always want Scandinavian donors out there.”
Schou also said that the sperm bank is in need of Black, Asian, Hispanic, Mediterranean and mixed-race sperm donors.

150 Siblings, 1 Sperm Donor
Sperm donation has officially gotten out of control.
In the United States, there are databases full of half-brothers and sisters, who all share the same father, and anonymous sperm donor.
Numbers of kids in these donor families are from 20 to 150, and surprisingly, they keep on growing.
Parents, donors and experts are in complete shock about the number of children one sperm donor has fathered. While they were promised low numbers at the time of the donation, these high numbers of brothers and sisters raises fears of accidental incest and the spread of genetic conditions occurring.
These families are now working to change the laws in the U.S. to match sperm donor laws in Europe.
