Travel to Costa Rica - Cirugía Plástica

The idea of medical tourism a few years ago was thought of as a luxury.

Now it seems that the world is shrinking and bringing all cultures together in many ways, even medically.

Globalization of health care is now becoming a necessity and the days of medical tourism that meant fun in the sun with a nip and tuck are over.

Costa Rica is a tourism destination that Americans, Canadians, and Europeans have always flocked to.

With their advanced health care standards Costa Rica is being considered a prime destination for medical tourism as well.

Breast Implant Incisions: What are the Options?

You've decided to go through with breast augmentation surgery, but have you been informed about all of the aspects?

Before visiting a plastic surgeon, it's important, as a patient, to inform yourself. This way you can ask the right questions, and decide if this procedure (and surgeon) is right for you.

While most patients are caught up in choosing the size, shape and type of breast implant they'd like to have, deciding on the technique is just as important.

Breast augmentation surgery uses four common techniques, and learning about them can help you make the right decision about your own surgery.

According to the WIMD article, here are the four types:

1. Periareolar Incision:
This type of breast implant incision is very common, and it is also known as the nipple incision. The incision is placed around the outside of the areola to help hide the scar.

2. Inframammary Incision: This type of incision is placed underneath the breast, along the crease or fold where the breast meets the abdominal skin. A pocket is created for the implant, and it is slid into position behind the nipple.

3. Transaxillary Incision: Also known as the armpit incision, this type is perfect for the patient who doesn’t want a single visible scar on her breasts. This is a more difficult technique, and it involves a cut in the armpit fold and a small channel to the breast. The implant is placed into the incision and guided through the channel with an endoscope.

4. TUBA Incision: TUBA stands for trans-umbilical breast augmentation, and this type of incision is inconspicuously placed inside the bellybutton. Using an endoscope, the plastic surgeon then creates a tunnel to each breast, and then empty, inflatable implants are pushed through, and filled to the desired size.

Botox Tops Holiday Wish Lists

Image Courtesy of: ©2009 David C. Pearson, M.D.
Last Christmas, maybe you asked Santa for a sweater, a new smart phone, or a flashy pair of shoes, but this year, the most in-demand holiday gifts simply cannot be wrapped.

Plastic surgery procedures like Botox, dermal fillers and mommy makeovers are popular gift requests. Many women (and some men too) are hoping for a little nip and tuck this Christmas for a fresh start to 2012.

But if you're planning on giving the gift of youth this year, it's definitely going to cost you.

Newport Beach-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Tenley Lawton, explained to ABC, “For a simple injectable, it could be as low as a few hundred dollars. If were talking about a full mommy makeover, which could include a tummy tuck and a breast lift or a breast augmentation, it could be anywhere between $7,000 and $15,000.”

Would you ask for plastic surgery for Christmas? If not, what's on your holiday wish list this year?

Cosmetic Surgery Prices May Rise in UK

The UK government has announced guidelines for a 20% VAT tax on 'elective' cosmetic surgery.

There is already VAT in place for skin care cosmetic procedures like Botox, dermal fillers, and chemical peels, but now this could extend into surgical procedures like breast implants, tummy tucks and liposuction.

The government argues, “The mere fact that a cosmetic treatment may make a patient feel more confident about their appearance is not in itself sufficient to make the treatment exempt.”

However, members of the British Association for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery disagree. They called these guidelines an "ethical minefield" and suggested more debate with professionals before going ahead with any sort of implementation.

Former BAAPS president and consultant plastic surgeon Dr. Douglas McGeorge addressed the ethical issues of this tax saying, “Should prominent ear correction be taxed; an operation performed on young children to prevent them from being bullied and developing psychological problems? What level of asymmetry or abnormality is required to justify breast surgery? When do large breasts create enough of a physical problem to allow treatment?”

He added, “Large noses will kill no one on their own, but can create major problems in life that prevents individuals contributing to society and, indeed, have been known to result in self harming.”

A Woman's Life is Spared Thanks to her Breast Implants

Breast implants have been celebrated by men and women for years now, but today they are being praised for a very different reason.

This common plastic surgery procedure is known for enhancing the breasts, something that definitely benefits both sexes.

Breast implants apparently come with another unexpected benefit though...life saving powers!

Yesterday, it was reported that a woman's life was spared after being stabbed in the heart by her husband. How? Her silicone breast implants of course.

The report said the implants were so large, that the knife didn't even reach close to her heart, which is a good thing for her.

She is certainly lucky, and can even thank her husband. Although he was the one that tried to kill her, he was also the one who suggested she get breast implants five years ago.

...oh, the irony!

Board Certification Separates Expert from Novice in Plastic Surgery

When considering plastic surgery, what is the number one priority?

Your heath.

Unfortunately, many patients make the mistake of thinking plastic surgery procedures like liposuction are no big deal, and end up with botched surgeries or even dead at the hands of an inexperienced cosmetic surgeon.

Doctors of many specialties are now offering cosmetic procedures in their practices, but many experts in the field warn patients about the very serious risks.

Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon can mean the difference between great results and a lifetime of regret and reconstructive surgery. Board-certified plastic surgeons work for many years being trained in only plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgeons however, only receive a year of workshops, which is not even close to sufficient for performing these procedures.

To learn more about the risks of choosing a cosmetic surgeon that isn't board certified, read the full article: Inexperienced Cosmetic Surgeons, Fatal Results

Are Breast Implants the Newest Weapon of Choice for Terrorists?

The Fembots from the movie Austin Powers
Forget the standard shoe bomb or underwear bomb, terrorists have taken airplane bombing to a whole new level.

The US Department of Homeland Security recently warned about terrorist group al-Qaida's plan to actually implant explosives in suicide bombers' bodies.

Bombs hidden in breast implants and butt implants would evade the current airport security scanners, which means security will have even tighter.

Diamonds Are Forever, but Breast Implants Sure Aren't!

A common misconception about plastic surgery is that it's a one-time investment to last a lifetime.

Wrong!

Plastic surgery procedures, like breast implants for example, require maintenance and upkeep, which is important, considering that these devices are inside the body.

The FDA released a report this week, stating that breast implants are indeed safe, but they need to be replaced every 10 years. So, if you had breast implants surgery at 18 years old, this means you'll have to undergo at least FIVE more breast implant procedures throughout the years.

The FDA also warned that if breast implants aren't checked out and maintained periodically, serious risks and complications are very likely to occur. To learn more about the newest breast implant report, read the full article here: Unlike Diamonds, Breast Implants Aren't Forever
