Breast Cancer Death Rate Lowered by Reducing Dietary Fat

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the breast. The damaged cells can invade surrounding tissue — with research, early detection and treatment, many individuals continue a normal life.

Findings from a 2014 Women's Intervention Nutrition Study (WINS) study on breast cancer were presented at the 2014 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium conference. Results included data that had previously been used to test whether dietary intervention can improve the clinical outcome of women with breast cancer, and death rates after 15 years of follow-up.

Giuliana Rancic Has Breast Cancer

Yesterday, Giuliana Rancic, of E! News and Fashion Police fame, revealed some sad news.

She told Ann Curry on the Today Show, “Through my attempt to get pregnant through IVF, we sadly found out that I have early stages of breast cancer. It’s been a shock.”

Rancic has always been open about her personal life. She and her husband have put their infertility struggles front and center on their reality show, Giuliana and Bill.

While attempting to undergo a third round of IVF, her infertility specialist insisted that she get a mammogram; little did she know it would save her life.

Despite facing surgery and radiation therapy, Rancic wants to use her situation to raise awareness for all women to perform screenings, on themselves, and through mammography.

She said, “I have so many young female viewers who watch me and I want to help them. I have an amazing platform to really help people so that’s why it was really important for me to share this story."

SGK1 Protein Linked to Infertility and Miscarriage

According to scientists out of the United Kingdom, a protein found in the uterine lining might have the power to improve treatments for infertility, miscarriage, and may even become a new form of birth control.

Study leader Jan Brosens said in a press statement, “I can envisage that in the future, we might treat the womb lining by flushing it with drugs that block SGK1 before women undergo IVF (in-vitro fertilization).”

The connection seems to be related to the levels of SGK1; if too high, a woman is unable to conceive, and if too low, the risk of recurrent miscarriage seems to be quite high.

The researchers hope that this discovery might lead to the treatment of infertility, long before a women wants to get pregnant. This could potentially improve the chances of motherhood for millions of women.

"In the future, we might take biopsies of the womb lining to identify abnormalities that might give them a higher risk of pregnancy complications, so that we can start treating them before they get pregnant,” explained study researcher Madhuri Salker.

Save the Girls: Speaking out Against Female Genital Mutilation

Millions of girls and women are scarred by female genital mutilation (FGM) every single year.

This completely backwards practice of injuring, removing or "altering" the female genitals goes on without good reason, and victims receive absolutely ZERO health benefits from the procedure.

In fact, FGM does the complete opposite. Along with causing excessive scarring, bleeding and an interruption of healthy bodily functions, FGM causes mental scars that span multiple generations of afflicted women.

The only way to end this horrifying "surgery" is to speak out against it. The more girls, boys, women and men know about the terrible consequences of FGM, the better.

Beating the System: Getting Around China's One-Child Policy

For 30 years, China's government has controlled its country's population by limiting the number of births a woman can have.

The general rule is one couple, one child (with a few small exceptions), but what happens in the instance of multiple births?

Many Chinese families have been taking advantage of this loophole for years, and because of this, the number of twins, triplets and quadruplets is higher than average in some provinces.

How do they do it? By taking fertility drugs, of course. Clomid, the drug used to stimulate ovulation in women with female infertility factors, is being used in China by healthy, fertile women in order to have multiple births.

Experts say that this practice is putting mothers and babies at risk, but it doesn't seem like things are going to change there any time soon...

Young Breast Cancer Patients Do Anything to Preserve Fertility

Carly Byrd, 29, froze her eggs before starting chemotherapy
Carly Byrd was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 25, and four years later she's still fighting for her life.

Byrd is one of 11,000 young women (under 40) who get breast cancer in the United States every year. Instead of worrying about dying of cancer, many women are more scared of something else: infertility.

Naturally, Carly had to do something, and fast. Her oncologist recommended chemotherapy (which is what causes early menopause, and therefore, infertility in young patients), and so she took the matter into her own hands.

Carly and her mother traveled to Dallas, Texas, where she freezed a number of her eggs in the weeks leading up to her chemo. While she's still battling cancer today, Carly is still optimistic about her future, especially because she now has a real shot at becoming a mom.

Patients Don't Pay a Dime for IVF in Israel

Did you know Israel is the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) capital of the world?

It is, and it doesn't have anything to do with the number of infertile Israeli people.

Infertility actually affects the same amount of people as the rest of the world, the difference is the treatment.

Unlike countries like the United States, where infertility treatments can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, IVF in Israel doesn't cost patients anything, which explains why so many choose to undergo IVF there.

Israel's unique policy allows a woman unlimited rounds of IVF until the age of 45, which is limited to two births. The government is also considering opening up this coverage to gay males, who want to use surrogacy to have a baby.

Once people hear of this, there is sure to be a storm of controversy with angry, broke and infertile people up in arms about the amounts they pay to start a family. There's no reason why people should spend their life savings on having a baby...at least that's what Israelis believe.

The Mommy Makeover: Plastic Surgery's Latest Trend

Being a mother is one of the most rewarding things in life.

Unfortunately, being a mother also means a woman must sacrifice her body in order to go through pregnancy and childbirth.

Post-baby, a mother's body still goes through a lot of changes, and in today's world, many women aren't having it.

Hundreds of thousands of women in the United States undergo a Mommy Makeover each year, to get their bodies back post-pregnancy with a lot of help from plastic surgeons.

The Mommy Makeover consists of the tummy tuck, breast lift, liposuction and sometimes even vaginoplasty.

Fertility Drugs May Harm Eggs

When undergoing in-vitro fertilization, it's necessary to take ovary-stimulating fertility drugs in order to produce a good amount of eggs for increased chances of a successful pregnancy.

But today, things are changing, especially after a new study that found fertility drugs actually increase chromosomal abnormalities in eggs by up to 50%. These faults can cause health conditions like Down's Syndrome, and there seems to be a general fear amongst infertility specialists regarding this issue.

The study was performed in women with an average age of 40, and women of this age usually get very high doses of fertility drugs during this process.

The Price of Beauty: Female Hair Loss

Hair extensions may look great, but they come with serious risks!
Young women everywhere are going bald, all in the name of beauty!

Hair loss in women is more common than ever, thanks to a very popular beauty trend: hair extensions. No matter the type (and there are many), hair extensions can cause serious damage to the hair. The stress and pulling on hair follicles causes breakage and hair loss, and can even result in noticeable bald spots.

Hair loss surgeons are very concerned about this growing trend. More women than ever (some as young as 20!) are seeking professional treatment for the damage that they've caused to their hair. Unfortunately, in many cases, the consequences are permanent.

The only solutions include to continue wearing damaging wigs and weaves, or to undergo hair restoration surgery procedures like follicular unit extraction (or FUE for short).

Post-Mortem Sperm Retrieval Makes Life After Death a Real Possibility

Death may be something we don't like to talk about, but let's face it: it's inevitable.

For some people, it happens unexpectedly, due to an accident, illness or for brave soldiers who lose their lives in combat.

With the advancement of infertility (IVF) treatments, more and more people are looking into the possibility of creating life after death.

Post-mortem sperm retrieval makes this a reality, and while it's acceptable for wives and girlfriends to use their deceased partner's sperm with his consent, taking sperm to conceive a child (or grandchild in one case) without the man's knowledge is a hot topic of debate.

Surrogate Mothers Are Truly Amazing!

Yvonne Heller: Super Surrogate Mother
For some couples dealing with infertility issues, IVF treatments can be expensive, exhausting, and sometimes bear no results.

Women with female infertility factors that prevent them from physically carrying a child are faced with a tough decision. Many people choose adoption, but with new technologies in infertility treatments, gestational surrogacy has become very popular in the past few years.

With the rise in people seeking surrogate mothers, of course comes controversy. Some naysayers claim that surrogate mothers are just a "womb for rent" looking to pick up a paycheck and nothing else.

Ten-time surrogate mother, Yvonne Heller, proves this point to be very wrong. To learn more about Yvonne Heller's amazing story, read the full article!
