What is neurology?

Neurology is the area of medicine concerned with the brain and spinal cord and neurosurgery is one of the most specialized and complex areas of medicine. Because of the complexity of neurology and the intricate workings of the brain, neurosurgeons undergo at least 7 years of medical training and use only the latest medical and neurosurgical techniques.
Neurological problems occur when the connections between the nervous system and the brain are interrupted or damaged in some way.
Neurological diseases commonly attack the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and can also damage the peripheral nervous system (connecting the brain and limbs) as well as the autonomic nerve system (controlling involuntary functions such as heart rate, perspiration and digestion).
Neurological disease can affect any part of the brain or nervous system and lead to varied neurological problems from behavioural & cognitive, such as ADHD in children, to degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Epilepsy, one of the most common neurological diseases, affects more than 50 million people.
