Sugar-Free Gum May Damage Tooth Enamel

Sugar-free food products like chewing gum, soft drinks and sweets may seem like a healthy alternative to their sugar-packed counterparts, but a recent study shows that the sugar substitutes might cause health problems too.

Processed foods that use sugar alcohol as a replacement for natural sugar are lower in calories, which is good for weight loss and diabetes patients.

Sugar-free gum, which has substitutes called sorbitol and xylitol, has been proven to prevent tooth decay, which is a great thing for oral hygiene.

However, this new research shows that the same sugar substitute can also cause the tooth enamel to wear down and dissolve, which in the big picture, is much worse than a dental cavity.
