Dr. Anthony Youn, a plastic surgeon in Detroit recently wrote an article called, "Smoking can make your nipples fall off”, and it definitely grabbed everyone's attention.
But there's a lot of truth behind this frightening title, something Dr. Youn has experienced first hand as a practicing plastic surgeon.
He wrote, “I cringe every time I see a patient for a breast lift who is a smoker. I’m deathly afraid that despite my warning, she will smoke before or after surgery and cause her nipples to turn black and fall off. Yes. Smokers who undergo breast lifts are at great risk of losing their nipples.”
And breast lifts aren't the only procedure smoking patients should quit for. Tummy tucks, facelifts, and breast reduction procedures can all have similar effects with cigarette-addicted patients.
Dr. Jennifer Walden, a plastic surgeon in Austin, Texas told CBS News, “Even though it sounds graphic and kind of gross, it’s important to talk about this complication so patients consider themselves forewarned.”
