Breast Implant Incisions: What are the Options?

You've decided to go through with breast augmentation surgery, but have you been informed about all of the aspects?

Before visiting a plastic surgeon, it's important, as a patient, to inform yourself. This way you can ask the right questions, and decide if this procedure (and surgeon) is right for you.

While most patients are caught up in choosing the size, shape and type of breast implant they'd like to have, deciding on the technique is just as important.

Breast augmentation surgery uses four common techniques, and learning about them can help you make the right decision about your own surgery.

According to the WIMD article, here are the four types:

1. Periareolar Incision:
This type of breast implant incision is very common, and it is also known as the nipple incision. The incision is placed around the outside of the areola to help hide the scar.

2. Inframammary Incision: This type of incision is placed underneath the breast, along the crease or fold where the breast meets the abdominal skin. A pocket is created for the implant, and it is slid into position behind the nipple.

3. Transaxillary Incision: Also known as the armpit incision, this type is perfect for the patient who doesn’t want a single visible scar on her breasts. This is a more difficult technique, and it involves a cut in the armpit fold and a small channel to the breast. The implant is placed into the incision and guided through the channel with an endoscope.

4. TUBA Incision: TUBA stands for trans-umbilical breast augmentation, and this type of incision is inconspicuously placed inside the bellybutton. Using an endoscope, the plastic surgeon then creates a tunnel to each breast, and then empty, inflatable implants are pushed through, and filled to the desired size.
