Pre-Surgery Diet Could Improve Results

Scientists from Harvard School of Public Health showed the importance of a healthy diet...especially before surgery.

The researchers performed an experiment on mice, trying to figure out if diet had an impact on surgery outcomes.

Two groups of mice were involved in the study. The  first group ate a protein free diet before surgery and the other ate a regular diet.

The results showed that the first group was significantly healthier post-op, and all of them survived. The other group wasn't so lucky...40 percent died after surgery.

Scientists recorded the results, and performed the experiment one more time. This time, they focused on eliminating specific proteins in the diet to see which was the most effective at protecting the body during and after surgery.

Based on the results, eliminating tryptophan from the diet had the most effective outcome for the mice.

Hopefully, researchers will begin to test this special diet in humans soon.

Dr. James R. Mitchell, study researcher and assistant professor of genetics and complex diseases at the Harvard School of Public Health said, “We’re excited about the possibility of simple, brief dietary interventions to reduce susceptibility to surgical stress, and anxious to see if such treatments will work in people in clinical trials.”

He added, “We don’t know how or if this will translate to humans, but we are hopeful.”
