In New York City, restaurants that have more than 20 chains, like McDonalds and Cosi, have to display the calorie content on menus due to a law passed in 2008. The legislation is intended to educate customers on their heath choices (remember the lady who sued McDonalds because she ‘didn’t k now it was unhealthy?’) and attempt to combat America's obesity epidemic.
What if every restaurant had to post the calories in their food? Would people be more educated about weight loss and therefore make healthier decisions? Or would more knowledge about choices create more of a stigma between venues? Does the emphasis on calorie content feed the eating complexes that continually plague teenage and young women?
The effects of such legislation can be argued either way. What are your thoughts?
